The model works perfectly. The burner is made of machined metal and is fitted with a magnet to hold its position under the hot cylinder. The Voltmeter allows to optimize the outpup power of the engine.
The engine is somewhat challenging. There are a number of “contact points” that seem to require lubrication or it simply stops after repeated attempts. After numerous “pin point” lubrication involvements with its linkage it slowly came to life. Without tinkering (and lubricating) the associated linkage it would not run at all. It seems to require a larger heat source to operate efficiently, the included source is rather marginal..
This little engine immediately created smiles and questions. Great fun for all ages. Purchase 91% rubbing alcohol at your local Meijer for $6.00 instead of the higher priced fuel that is recommended.
I bought this for my husband who just graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree. Although I got him many gifts, I got this one as an afterthought for something cool he can have on his desk. It turned out to be his favorite gift in his words 'he's ever gotten in his life'! It sparked so much conversation with him and his friend, and I loved learning the principals through this really cool visual. The product is so sleek, it's got a stainless steel finish. Also, you need alcohol which it doesn't come with. I bought 91% rubbing alcohol from Walgreens, but it does discolor the bulb, so be sure you buy the right alcohol!
